National Happiness Happens Day has occurred on August 8th every year since 1999 as an awareness day to promote and boost happiness in all forms. From cherishing the things we already have to the appreciation we give to others, this day is all about letting happiness flow in all directions by smiling more and encouraging positivity in our everyday lives.
National Happiness Happens Day serves as a reminder to not only share our happiness with others while giving others the chance to express theirs, it’s also about not letting bad days get in your way of being your best self. We at Unicorn Jazz love to celebrate National Happiness Happens Day as the core theme of this awareness day falls so in line with the moral tales found in our stories – spreading happiness in ourselves and to others while keeping a positive mindset, especially during tough times.
History of National Happiness Happens Day
National Happiness Happens Day began in 1999 as Admit You’re Happy Day, which was later changed to the name we have for it now. This awareness day was started by the Secret Society of Happy People, an organization founded in August 1998 to encourage the celebration and expression of human happiness.
The Secret Society of Happy People created National Happiness Happens Day as a way for people to reflect on the happiest times of their lives and to always remember to give our appreciation to the people and things we have in our daily lives.
How to Celebrate National Happiness Happens Day
On August 8th, take some time out of the day to define what happiness means to you, then simply go out and live it! Be sure to think about all the people you have in your life that you cherish, and what things you currently have in your daily life that you may take for granted when going over what may be included in your definition of happiness.
Walk outside with a smile, like a person who truly appreciates what is being done for them and even for the little things that go their way. After all, the meaning behind National Happiness Happens Day is to spread joy in the fact that the grass on our side of the fence is beautiful and filled with wonder and warm, loving support too!
An additional theme behind the National Happiness Happens Day movement is selflessness, lending an ear to others and encouraging them to reflect on their happiness as well, reminding them to be happy with what they do have, and not to focus only on the things we want but don’t have currently. In times of sickness, prove that happiness too can be contagious and that we can all begin to live happier, more joyful lives by striving to make happiness happen in our lives, and the lives of others, every day.
In the end, the beauty of this day is that it can be celebrated in as many unique ways as there are definitions for what happiness means to people, so what National Happiness Happens Day means, and how to celebrate it, is entirely up to you!
