What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is one of the fastest growing outdoor sports. It combines aspects of treasure hunting with high-tech navigation.

What do you need to get started in this sport?

A computer with Internet access
A GPS unit

Step 1: Visit: http://www.geocaching.com/

I have created an account for our Let's Talk group.

The user name is: Let's Talk Technology

I will email everyone the password.

Spend some time in the "Getting Started" area. There is lots of good information about the sport here!

Step 2: Attend the May 13th meeting and try out the sport! If you like it, you can look into buying your own GPS unit and continuing the fun.

More details about the meeting will follow in the near future.

I've been exploring geocaching a bit in the past week. I added some links to the, uh... "Links" heading above this column.

I'd like to get a GPS unit to play with this summer. The REI website (http://www.rei.com search for geocaching) has a nice comparison feature. Does anyone have any recommendations for units?

A note from Carol about the above message. I got one after church on Sunday, it was the last one in my local store so you might want to call to see if they have any at your favorite Radio Shack.

We played with it for a while then my husband took it on his bike ride at the Metro Park. He found his way home too!

Does anyone else have that model? It seemed like a good beginner unit from the reviews I read.
